Guidance

Owning it well.

Fine jewellery does not need much. Most damage comes from a few avoidable habits rather than from wear.

Everyday

Put jewellery on last, after fragrance, lotion, and hairspray. Those are the most common cause of dulled metal, and the effect builds up quietly over months.

Take it off before swimming, cleaning, and the gym. Chlorine attacks alloys, household cleaners attack finishes, and a knock against a weight plate will mark almost anything.

Cleaning

Warm water, a drop of unscented washing-up liquid, and a soft brush is enough for most pieces. Rinse properly and dry with a soft cloth.

Avoid ultrasonic cleaners unless you know the piece can take one. They are efficient, and they are efficient at loosening settings and damaging softer or treated stones.

Storage

Store pieces separately, not together in one box. Most scratches on gold come from other jewellery rather than from the world.

A soft pouch or a lined compartment is enough. Keep silver away from open air if you would rather it did not tarnish.

On patina

Metal changes with wear. Edges soften, surfaces pick up a fine texture, and blackened finishes lighten where the piece is handled most.

That is not damage, and we would rather you did not treat it as such. An object that shows no evidence of having been worn has not been worn.
